Most musicians will never see a song take top spot on singles charts in 47 countries and sell over 20 million copies. Her 2012 tune co-written with guitarist Tavish Crowe and produced by Josh Ramsay did all that. That all but guarantees Jepsen is known as a one-hit wonder. But the tag is both unfair and inaccurate when discussing the Mission singer’s career.“Look, it definitely was somewhat paralyzing at first to know what to do after a song like that,” said Jepsen. “But Tavish, my guitarist, said it best when he said it gave me the chance to show what he knew I could do and you can’t be anything but thankful for that. As things continue, I get to keep on working toward what I want to give to pop music and, to date, Dedicated is the best thing I’ve done in my mind.”last_img read more

first_img Share your voice YouTube says it recognizes that “minors could be at risk of online or offline exploitation.” Seth Rosenblatt/CNET YouTube’s recommendation system enables people who leer at videos of children in bathing suits to more easily find other videos that could offer pedophiliac appeal, according to a study reported Monday by The New York Times. YouTube said it has expanded its efforts from earlier this year to limit recommendations of “borderline content” to include videos featuring minors in risky situations, YouTube said in a blog post Monday. “While the content itself does not violate our policies, we recognize the minors could be at risk of online or offline exploitation,” Google-owned YouTube said. “We’ve already applied these changes to tens of millions of videos across YouTube.”The company referred CNET to the blog post when asked for comment on the study. The study comes after YouTube disabled comments in February on videos featuring minors. That move followed reports about an subculture of posting comments on YouTube videos of children that could be construed in a sexualized way; the comments include time-stamp links that would take viewers to similar videos at other sexually suggestive moments. YouTube’s algorithm played a role in that scandal as well: Once somebody happened upon these video and clicked one of the comment links, the sidebar of recommended videos would surface many others like it. The latest study, from researchers at Harvard’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society, was conducted after Google removed comments from videos with minors. The study found that YouTube’s automatic video-recommendation system would surface otherwise innocuous home movies after a user watched sexually themed content. It resulted in a library of videos that sexualizes children, according to researchers in the report. Digital Media YouTube Tags Comment 1last_img read more

Airtel Payments BankConsidered to be the first payment bank in the country, Airtel Payments Bank offers a 7.25 percent interest rate on savings accounts. Currently, when compared to other large and small commercial banks, Airtel Payments Bank is offering the highest return on a savings account. The bank is a fully digital and paperless bank and the account holders are able to operate accounts using the mobile app only. Airtel Payments Bank customers would also get access to a MasterCard powered online card.2. Paytm Payments BankVijay Shekhar Sharma-promoted Paytm Payments Bank began operations in May 2017. The bank is offering a 4 percent interest rate on savings account. Paytm Payments Bank supports online fund transfer services such as Immediate Payment Service (IMPS), Unified Payment Interface (UPI) and National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT).3. first_imgA comparison of university rankings in physics, as determined by the credit allocation method (CAM) and two other methods: Shen’s method and the Total Citations (TC) method. Credit: Wang et al. ©2017 EPL Journal information: Europhysics Letters (EPL) (Phys.org)—Assessing and ranking research institutes is important for awarding grants, recruiting employees, promoting institutes, and other reasons. But finding a fair and accurate method for assessing the performance of research institutes is challenging due to the many factors involved, such as the number of published papers and citations, the unreliability of some citations, and the fact that many papers have multiple authors from different institutes with unequal contributions. In a new study published in EPL, a team of scientists from China whose members study complex systems, data science, and physics has developed a new approach called the credit allocation method (CAM) for ranking research institutes that accounts for all of these factors by using many thousands of directed networks. “Different from other metrics based on citations, our work considers the citation network structure and provides one way to rank the credit for research institutes for different research fields from the viewpoint of academic reputation,” coauthor Jian-Guo Liu, at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, told Phys.org.The basic idea is that each directed network consists of one randomly chosen paper that is linked to all of the papers that have cited that paper. Then each of these citing papers is linked to all of the other papers that it cites, as long as those papers have at least one author from one of the same research institutes as the original paper. By using a formula that accounts for the order of each research institute (those listed first in the paper receive more credit than those listed later), the researchers computed the credit allocated to each research institute due to the original paper. After repeating this process for nearly half a million papers in the field of physics, with authors from approximately 19,000 research institutes, the researchers considered another problem that makes the assessment of research institutes difficult: the citation data is often unreliable. The researchers refer to a recent study that found that more than 30% of research papers had at least one incorrect citation, and that 10% of all citations were incorrect, meaning the papers cited did not clearly support the statements they were meant to support. To address this problem, the researchers randomly rewired some of the citation links in the networks, creating an artificial disturbance intended to model the inaccuracies in the citation data. In the final rankings, many of the top-ranked physics research institutes identified by the new method corresponded to institutes with high reputations. The top four overall were the University of California, Bell Labs, the Max Planck Institute, and MIT. The top four in China were the University of Science and Technology of China, Nanjing University, Peking University, and Tsinghua University.Although the researchers showed that the new method outperforms other methods of assessing research institutes, they note that it has some shortcomings. In particular, it does not account for the fact that older papers tend to have more citations than newer papers, so research institutes with longer histories tend to be ranked higher. The researchers plan to address this detail in the future by accounting for the age of the institution.”In future work, we also plan to investigate the citation networks of some specific research fields, such as management science, complexity, statistical physics, and computer science, in order to rank the research institute credit of these fields,” Liu said. “We also plan to develop a website to publish the ranking results for researchers all over the world.” Assessing scientific research by ‘citation wake’ detects Nobel laureates’ papers © 2017 Phys.orgcenter_img More information: J.-P.
